Cold walk home - 2009 I'm fascinated by details of industrial decay in what I think of as the 'blue collar' parts of town. They fill me with a poignant mixture of dread and nostalgia for a disappearing America that I never knew. I have an inescapable notion - glamourized, I'm sure - that life in small industrial towns was harsher, yet simpler. I created this illustration in Adobe Illustrator CS3 - it's all vector art, not bitmap - with the photos below for reference. I took the street photo along West Marginal Way. The girl is from a Flickr photo set of the Rat City Rollergirls. I dropped the girl into the composition as an afterthought because it felt empty and sterile. Once I added the streamers in the wind, it suddenly became the story of a girl walking home alone along the tracks on a cold, wet, windy night. |
